Topic: The Impression as an Exchange Student from New Zealand to China

You are an exchange student from New Zealand to study in China for a period of time. During one of the school’s assemblies, you are invited to answer the Chinese students’ questions by giving your impression and express your point of view about the similarities and differences between China and New Zealand. Your teacher will play the role of the student(s) to ask you some questions.

You need to give an introduction to invite the student to ask the questions and the following ideas could possibly be included in the students’ questions and asked by Chinese students in the assembly.

  • Your overall impression about China and New Zealand
  • What you like most about China and New Zealand
  • The friends you met in China and New Zealand
  • What attributes you should have as a high school student in New Zealand and China
  • What you would like to recommend about China to New Zealand and vis versa

Conditions:

  • You will hold a conversation with your teacher, which will be recorded for assessment reference purposes.
  • Your part in conversation should be a minium length of two minute.
  • You have a week to prepare for this conversation and you have 2 periods in class on preparation.
  • Speaking order will be decided before hand and determined by ballot and/or negotiation.
  • Cue cards are not allowed but visual aids (maps or pictures) can be used.
  • Check the assessment schedule and examples of performance carefully and make sure you know what level of performance is required, so that you know what you must do to achieve at each level.
  • The language examples are given as a guide for you, you may use part of them or adapt them, but do not quote them verbatim.
  • Your speech must be your own work.
  • You must speak clearly – don’t speak too fast.
  • Use as a wide variety of vocabulary and sentence structures as possible and correctly used preposition.
  • Avoid repetition and lists. Vary your word order – inversion.
  • The date for the assessment is               of July 2010. Ensure that you arrive in good time for your appointment.
